Technological determinism is often described as the most important influence upon society. The theory relates to the studies conducted by Marshall Mcluhan who states that we are living in a 'new age of technology that has never been experienced before' Mcluhan believes that the new electronic media is changing the way people, think, act and feel. The current technological enviroment when looked back upon will be seen as a major turning point in the history of communication.

Technology has a dramatic, direct one-way effect on out lives. Technology affects society, but society does not affect technology.
Technology such as writing, print, television or computers have changed society. In its most extreme form, the entire form of society is seen as been determind by technology. It transforms society at every level including institutions, social interaction and individuals.
I believe that technology will always improve and make our lives easier as it keeps advancing. If technology like emails, mobile , digital television etc had not been developed then we wouldn't be able to work as effeciently and as quickly as we do now. We adapt and use it to suit and help the particular lifestyle we lead i dont believe it will take over and control our lives.

I dont think I'd go as far as to say it controls our lives either, but it is a MASSIVE contributing factor to how we live our lifes.
Technology definately has effected society, I think that society is pretty dependent on technology.
Personally I get up in the morning by my alarm (on my mobile), then I'll listen to some music on my Ipod speakers, then when I come in I will go on the internet whilst watching TV etc etc.
Not only that, but how much more time do you spend on the net than your parents? Cause I dont think I could think of one person who doesnt go on the internet that is our age-middle aged, its deffo effecting us if we are spending time online instead of doing other things.
We can do everything online instead of doing it IRL, by having this option it means in some case will do our shopping online instead of in person - which def shows how technology is effecting our lives I'd say. Although I wouldnt say it was effecting in a bad way, but I htink it could have the potential too..
I mean I'm already always faffing around on facebook and the like instead of working all the time!
I agree with megan!you cant go through your day without technology influencing it in some shape or form.
It doesnt necessarily control our lives but we would lead completely different lives if we were to not have such technology as we have today!
i agree with you in saying that new technology has affected our society and institutions. It develops our culture and allows us to satisfy our constant change in demand for new gadgets, etc.
Helen,
You've received some good repsonses from your fellow study-group bloggers, and you all seem to be working together well to produce a discussion. The use of the hyperlink is helpful. I'm not entirely sure that I'd agree that 'society doesn not effect technology' ....surely people placing demands on what they want to be able to do quicker/differently assists the development of technology?
All the best
Emma
