Music Sharing online
The way we listen and purchase music today is very different to how we would have several years ago. Technology has changed and more and more upgraded and new gadgets are hitting the markets changing our behaviours and consumer choices. for instance i used to go into a music shop and buy cd's to play on a cd player whereas i now just download my music from the internet or get other people to send me music that they have downloaded from the internet and then once it is on my computer on itunes i can transfer it onto my ipod which i take everywhere with me. People today won't go into shops and by music as they can download it for free off the internet and share the music files with their friends.
Bands often try and make it big through networking sites by sending people messages asking them to listen to their music. Some people are obiously more interested in listening than others. I know i personally have never been particularly bothered in listening.
Music sharing can be successful for unkown artists/bands who want there music to be listened to and noticed as it can become more popular by it been spread across a large scale of people. Take Lilly Alan as an example she became well known through people listening to her music online and the Artic Monkeys were helped to become a big hit through the sending of URL's to myspace pages. People could just listen to them by the click of a button.
By online music sharing people can often listen to more varities of music rather than just the stuff that is in the charts thats been played on the radio all the time. You can just look up an artists name or the song and listen to it on the internet if you have heard about it through friends and you havnt heard it as its not normally your type of music rather than having to go out and buy it. People obviously wouldn'ty do this as if they havnt heard it before they may not like it so it would be a waste of money however with the internet you have the choise to listen and downlaod it and if you don't like it it can be deleted.
I think the face of popular music has been changed as more types of muic are been addressed and becoming more popular as they are been played on the radio more. I think musc can go through different phases of been popular. For example indie music once wasnt really played then all of sudden it became more popular probly due to people listening to bands of this type of music online.

Helen,
I was very interested in these comments on music sharing online, simply because music production is a huge interest of mine. You're quite right to pick up on the differences in how we use music nowadays. I was equally interested in your comments on how musicians try to reach a larger audience/market by music sharing.
All the best
Emma
yeah its weird, technology has developed so much its now not even an object we can hold in our hands (like a CD), it's just a file like in cyberspace!!
yeah, I'm more willing to listen to new, different things online because I know I don't have to pay for it, if I haf 2 pay for it I probably just wouldn't bother.
yeah, indie music is much more popular an widespread now. and obviously indie bands who have made it aren't complaining, but it kind of defeats the purpose of being 'independant' does it not, that they're popular and mainstream? it like, shifts it all around. But by publicity on the internet and how fast things spread via internet, they've been able to become popular and mainstream relatively easy.
yeah i don't pay for cd's anymore because i know i can download music for free or make my own cd which is a lot better.
Now there has been this rise of people listening to all kinds of music on the internet because they can even though it may not be their type of music. Isnt there a more likely chance of people making it big and becoming successfull as they are having more of a chance of showing people their talents by spreading their music amongst a wide audience?
yeah, i think thats also maybe y people don't stay famous for as long as they used to anymore. Becuase once people start listening to the next cool thing or the next genre they move on completely from what was popular before
Generalising that people today wont go into shops to buy CD's is not a fair judgement as people do still buy CD's! Think of all those CD's we used that where new in the radio unit - they wherent downloads! Lauren had bougth them, this demonstrates that people do still buy CD's instead of downloading.
I never listen to music online through myspace and the like - willingly, however, I have gone on friends profiles and fell in love with their profile song, which I probably wouldnt of heard of otherwise.
Now that the whole myspace music scene has become so big, do you think it will become less effective? I mean, I recieve loads of messages telling me to listen to music etc - do you think that this will put people off going on their page to listen to music etc, and they will just delete all music like messages recieved? I know that when I use to get the odd one I might actually go on their page for a few seconds, but now I just delete them. Is it possible that something so good has become too sucsessful now?
Do you think that the change of who is in and who isnt changes dramatically because of the influence of the internet music advertising scene? Or do you think this is just how society is now a days? I think its just how society is, we assume that society hasnt always been like and that 'now artists dont stay in the limelight for long'...but whats to say they ever did? Some artists do stay around for ages, surely this is apparant 'back in the day' and 'today' too, i.e spice girls?
I think most people have a combination of still buying a few CD's and then downloading any other songs they want. For example, if i see an album advertised on the tv i'll most likely go out and buy it as i can't be bothered to find each song through the internet. However, if its just singles i want and specific songs then i wouldn't think twice about downloading them as it's quicker and cheaper than buying the single in CD. What do you think, does anyone else do a bit of both too?
