Week one Task 1 -Bulletin board systems and Usenet

Bulletin Boards

Bulletin board is a computer system which allows users to dial into a system over a phone line and perform functions such as downloading software and data, reading news, uploading data, and exchanging messagers with other users.

They were a highly social phenomenon and used for meeting people and having discusions in messages boards as well as publishing articles and playing games. As the use of the internet has become more widespread bulletin boards have slowly faded in popularity.

Usernet

Usernet is a worldwide distributed discussion system. It consists of a set of newsgroups with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. Messagers or articles are sent to these newsgroups by people on computers with the appropriate software. The articles atre then braodcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks. Most modern usernet traffic is transported over the internet or UUCP.

I researshed usenet by looking on this website:

I dont use bulletin boards or usenet so i dont have much experience on them and would rather communicate with people through email, msn messenger or facebook.

Helen,

I'd be interested in learning where you got your information on Bulletin Boards from - this wasn't quite my understanding of them. When you're doing your research, do refer to the key texts on the course listed in your unit handbook, as well as the Internet....as the dangers of the Internet, is that not all sites are reputable.

All the best
